Shared Decision Making
- Happens when the school staff and members of the school community are involved in making decisions by consensus.
- Consensus means reaching a decision that everyone can support—even though it may not be a “first” choice.
- Purpose is to improve student learning through both the instructional program and support services
- Guidelines:
* Start small
* Agree on the specifics at the beginning
* Clearly state procedures, roles, and expectations
* Invite everyone
* Build trust and rapport
- Listen to all viewpoints respectfully
- Make sure to include ideas of the minority group in the final decision
- The school principal can make an interim decision while the group continues to work toward consensus
Collaborative Partnering
- Be a Good Listener
* Take in the whole message, not just the words.
* Sustain attention over time.
* Think about your words before you speak.
- Encourage Everyone to Participate
* Consider others’ feelings.
* Pay careful attention to the opinion of an individual or to someone whose viewpoint is not well-represented.
* Ask questions.
- Celebrate Often!
* Recognize accomplishments.
* Thank people: send a card, send an e-mail, place a thank you on school marquee
* Invite them to school events.
